The name for a type of Latin music that has its roots mostly in Cuban culture. The word salsa means “hot sauce” and is best distinguished from other Latin music styles by defining it as the sound developed by Puerto Rican musicians in New York. The dance structure is largely associated with Mambo patterns and has a particular feeling that is associated mainly with the Clave and the Montuno.
Salsa is the unique blending of traditional Latin sounds and dance steps with the freedom and turning actions of Swing and Hustle. A true nightclub dance that fits on crowded dance floors, Salsa is a must for Latin social dancing today.
Salsa’s fusion of an Afro-Caribbean beat with enhanced jazz textures results in an aggressive high-energy pulse that has become popular everywhere. Many of the patterns of Salsa are similar to those in Mambo and Cha Cha.
