Discotheques with high-quality sound systems and flashing lights became popular in Europe and the United States in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. During that time a new dance became popular on the crowded dance floors of New York--the hustle. It marked a return to the partnership dances in which couples danced touching each other. Now, the “retro” craze keeps this dance fresh, exciting, and full of energy.
Turns, spins, and wraps are primary components of the Hustle. Accomplished dancers will use syncopated timing and fakes along with elaborate arm styling.
Disco music is usually written in 2/4 or 4/4 time with a strong bass beat. The melody and rhythm are based on rhythm blues, and the accent on each bass beat makes the music hard to resist.
