The Bolero is a romantic, dramatic dance. It has different characteristics from its Cuban relative, the Rumba, in that it has long sweeping side steps and uses rise and fall to create a softer feeling. This softness makes this dance unique among rhythm dances.
Originally a Spanish dance in 3/4 time, the Bolero changed its form in Cuba, where it was initially in 2/4 time. It eventually moved to 4/4 time. Currently it’s danced to a very slow Rumba rhythm. Bolero music is frequently arranged with Spanish vocals and a subtle percussion effect, usually implemented with Conga or Bongos.
The Bolero is usually played in 4/4 time and to a slower tempo than Rumba. Rumba is very rhythmical, whereas the lyrical Bolero sounds like a Latin ballad.
